High-Performance Thermal Efficiency:
The glazing system needed to achieve a U-value of 1.1 W/m²K, a highly stringent requirement to ensure optimal energy efficiency.
-
Custom Designs:
The project demanded customised glazing solutions for various complex shapes and sizes, including angled façades and facetted windows, without compromising structural integrity or appearance.
-
Architectural Harmony:
The chosen glazing systems were expected to blend seamlessly with the modern design of the building while providing functionality and aesthetic appeal.
Salisbury Glass Centre was appointed by AG Builders LTD to execute the complete glazing package for the Standen Farm development in Andover. The scope of works involved supplying and installing a diverse range of premium aluminium glazing products that were required to meet both aesthetic and thermal performance standards. The project featured an array of complex designs, including large angled curtain walling façade screens, facetted window systems, and expansive sliding and bi-folding doors.
Systems and Products Used:
Salisbury Glass Centre used premium systems from Smart Aluminium Systems and Technal, ensuring top-quality performance, durability, and design flexibility. Each of the systems was carefully selected for its suitability to the project requirements.
- Windows: ALitherm 800 Contemporary
The window system utilised ALitherm 800 Contemporary, which is known for its excellent thermal performance and sleek appearance. The frames were finished in RAL 7016 Matt, a stylish anthracite grey, giving the windows a modern and minimalist look.
- Sliding Doors: Visoglide Plus
The Visoglide Plus system was selected for the large sliding doors. This system offers smooth operation and a slim profile, ideal for creating expansive views while maintaining high thermal efficiency. The doors were also finished in RAL 7016 Matt, ensuring consistency in appearance across the entire glazing package.
- Bi-Folding Doors: Visofold 1000
For the bi-folding doors, the Visofold 1000 system was chosen. This system allows for wide openings, providing flexibility and seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces. Like the other products, it was finished in RAL 7016 Matt to maintain visual cohesion throughout the building.
- Curtain Walling: Hydro/Technal Elegance
The curtain walling system, Hydro/Technal Elegance 52, was used for the large angled façade screens. This system provided the structural strength necessary for supporting large glazed areas while offering excellent thermal performance and aesthetic value.
Key Challenges:
1. Achieving Low U-Value:
The stringent U-value requirement of 1.1 W/m²K posed a challenge that Salisbury Glass Centre addressed by utilising triple-glazed units across all products. This contributed to achieving excellent thermal insulation, enhancing the building’s energy efficiency and comfort.
2. Complex Designs:
The building’s unique architectural features, including angled and facetted sections, required precise customisation. The use of the Hydro/Technal Elegance 52 system allowed for the creation of large, angled façade screens, while the Smart Aluminium Systems provided the flexibility needed for the facetted window designs.
3. Consisten Aesthetic:
Maintaining a consistent finish across all the different products was critical for the visual appeal of the building. Salisbury Glass Centre ensured that all window, door, and façade elements were finished in RAL 7016 Matt to create a unified and contemporary appearance.
Results:
The Standen Farm project was completed successfully, with all glazing elements meeting the client’s performance and design expectations. The triple-glazed systems provided exceptional thermal insulation, achieving the required U-value of 1.1 W/m²K. The high-quality aluminium frames and precise installation resulted in a sleek, modern appearance that complemented the building’s architectural design.
The use of advanced glazing systems ensured that the project not only looked visually impressive but also delivered on energy efficiency, which will provide long-term savings in energy costs and contribute to the building’s sustainability.
Conclusion:
Salisbury Glass Centre’s expertise in delivering complex glazing solutions played a critical role in the success of the Standen Farm project. By using premium products from Smart Aluminium Systems and Hydro/Technal, combined with meticulous planning and installation, Salisbury Glass Centre helped AG Builders LTD realise their vision of a modern, energy-efficient building with an exceptional architectural presence.
