Additional Modern Living Space

This project involved transforming a residential cottage located between Ringwood and Sopley, nestled next to the serene River Avon. The customer’s primary goal was to “bring the outside in,” creating a new living space that would seamlessly connect with the surrounding natural beauty while extending the property’s internal floor area. The project also aimed to enhance the aesthetics of the property’s rear, replacing a temporary awning with a fully glazed, light-filled living area.

Challenges 

Structural Considerations

This project required a new brick structure built by a builder, followed by the installation of a fully glazed front and roof by Salisbury Glass. Building control diligently followed and signed off the structure. 

Design and Customisation

The customer sought a modern yet traditional aesthetic, which necessitated: 

• A pair of thermally insulated aluminium doors with a matt black powder-coated finish. 
• A front triangular gable for a traditional-modern look. 
• Self-cleaning solar glass for consistent reflection across the roof and façade

Weather and Timing

Installed during October, seasonal weather posed the expected challenges. However, access to the property was good which smoothed the process.  

 

Solution 

Comprehensive Consultation

Salisbury Glass’s Area Sales Manager, Richard Goff, led a thorough consultation at the property, discussing glazing options, colours, and materials. Customers visited the Salisbury showroom to view installed models and self-cleaning solar glass. A 3D rendering was provided, enabling visualisation before finalising the order. 

Materials and Products 

• Windows & Doors: Smart Systems Alitherm 400 range with high thermal efficiency that keeps in heat in winter but lets out heat in the summer.  
• Roof: Ultraframe Classic roof.
• Overall U-Value achieved: 1.4, with a G-Value of 38%. 

Precision Design and Fabrication

Using AutoCAD LT, exact specifications for the roof and façade were created. These designs ensured precise alignment with the builder’s brick openings. All aluminium products were fabricated in-house by our skilled expert team, thoroughly quality-assured, and dispatched for seamless installation. 

Modern Technologies 

• Self-cleaning solar glass ensured clarity and thermal efficiency. 

• PAS 24-compliant multi-point locking systems improved security.
